Vauxhall Celebrates Success of Scrappage Scheme With £2,000 Giveaway

Del Boy and David Dickinson will be praising British bargain hunters today, as research from Vauxhall reveals that over 150,000 old bangers have been scrapped for a cash bonus towards a younger model.

According to the research, London is driving the cars for cash scheme with almost one in ten owners upgrading their wheels, compared to Cornwall and East Anglia where only 1% of drivers have scrapped their cars.

To mark London taking the title of the Banger Capital of Britain, Vauxhall has created the first ever Cash Car – an Astra encrusted with £2,000 worth of loose change. The car, which is covered from boot to bonnet in bona-fide British mint was mobbed today by hundreds of commuters at Liverpool Street station, eager to pocket some free cash.

£2K BANGERS FOR CASH DISCOUNT TOPS VAUXHALL’S SUMMER DEAL BONANZA

• Vauxhall embraces UK Government’s Scrappage Programme
• Buyers benefit from a minimum £2k discount on all Vauxhall cars and commercials
• Supplementary offers, such as 5% cash back and 0% finance, boost discounts further

Luton - Vauxhall gave its wholehearted support today to the Government’s Scrappage Programme, and confirmed that it would roll out the £2,000 discount across its full range of car and commercial vehicles, while maintaining all its existing finance offers – and some additional discounts, too.

Astra buyers, for example, will now benefit from not only a straight £2,000 discount across any car in the range, but also Vauxhall’s ‘You Pay, We Pay’ deal on eligible models, which gives them five per cent cash back on the amount financed, combined with nought per cent finance for up to four years, and free redundancy cover.

And if that weren’t enough, buyers who plump for the British-built Astra Life 1.4 hatchback receive a £3,870 ‘Scrap and Save’ discount from participating dealers, in addition to the £2,000 scrappage discount, reducing the price to £8,995 – a total saving of £5,870 off the recommended retail price.

Notes

The £2000 Government Scrappage Allowance towards a new car or commercial is offered on condition that the traded-in vehicle has been registered on or before August 31, 1999, and has been registered in the name of the new car buyer for at least one year. The registration document must also show the current name and address of the new car buyer. A valid MOT, as well as current road tax and insurance must also be presented to the participating retailer.

All vehicles will be scrapped (and recycled) in accordance with Vauxhall's end-of-life policy. A certificate of destruction will be issued against every vehicle scrapped under this programme.

RENAULT ANNOUNCES SCRAPPAGE SCHEME OFFERS

Following the recent Budget news surrounding scrappage, Renault has now confirmed its range of product offers ahead of the UK scheme’s official launch on 18th May 2009.

Since Alistair Darling’s announcement, customer enquiries for Renault products have risen dramatically. Toyota to encourage ‘scrappers’ to buy British-built cars

Toyota’s British-built Auris hatchback will be a highly attractive option for customers taking advantage of the new Government scrappage scheme.

Taking into account the £2,000 allowance announced by the Government in today’s Budget, Toyota will structure its incentives and finance packages to make Auris, built at Toyota’s Burnaston plant in Derbyshire, a highly attractive choice for those customers brought unexpectedly into the new car market by the scheme. INCREASE IN MICRA PRODUCTION

- Scrappage scheme sees 40% increase in Micra production -

Nissan’s Sunderland Plant is feeling the benefits of the UK scrappage scheme with a 40% increase in Micra production.

The news comes as the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that UK vehicle production has slowed to it slowest rate of decline in September since the crisis began.

Around 11,000 Micras rolled off the line making it a bumper month for the supermini, which has proved a hit with not only the Scrappage Scheme launched by the Government but Nissan’s own extended scheme.

Launched to coincide with the Government Scheme in April, Nissan’s extended Trade-in offer provides a minimum £2,000 trade in to any owner of a car aged 8 – 10 years when purchasing a Sunderland built Nissan.

As well as offering the savings to a wider range of potential buyers, it also aims to sustain the uplift in sales enjoyed by the company in recent months.
Sales of Micra topped 10,445 across Europe in September, an increase of 4% on last year making it Nissan’s second best selling model.

But Micra’s not the only Sunderland Plant model doing well, Qashqai sales were up 15% last month year on year with a strong customer order bank which continues to exceed expectations.

Trevor Mann, Senior Vice President Manufacturing, Nissan Europe: “The scrappage incentives have brought sales that wouldn’t normally have been generated with Micra proving one of the most popular. 

“Both the Government’s and Nissan’s own schemes have stimulated the market and allowed us to protect jobs at the plant and in the dealer network.

“The boost to production has been very welcome but we need to remain cautious as scrappage incentives are scheduled to come to an end shortly.
“We will continue to monitor the market and adjust our production plan accordingly.”

The Scrappage Scheme has been thrown a lifeline, and Nissan’s Trade-in deal lives on too!

Buyers who thought they had missed out on the guaranteed £2,000 Scrappage discount have been given another chance to take advantage of the scheme following today’s news that the Government has extended the incentive to include an additional 100,000 cars. However, it’s still of no use to any owner of a car that’s less than 10 years old.

Helping the car buying public to help the British car industry, Nissan has extended its buy-British Trade-in offer for an extra three months.

Originally available until 30th June, the offer provides a £2,000 minimum trade-in against any of its Sunderland built models for owners of cars aged between 8-10 years old. Following a significant boost in sales and a consistently high demand for the deal, Nissan has extended the offer until 30th September 2009.

As Britain’s biggest car maker, Nissan has a diverse range of British built models to choose from, including any new Micra, Note, Qashqai or Qashqai+2. With the help of the Trade-in offer, anyone with a car that’s 8 years old or older can take delivery of the chic British built Micra for as little as £5,995**.

Nissan’s UK MD, Paul Willcox comments: “We’re delighted to be able to extend our Trade-in deal for an additional three months – and delighted the car buying public is taking advantage of the Nissan offer. Our £2,000 minimum Trade-in provides what the Government’s Scrappage scheme fell short of offering: a real incentive to buy a British built car and a guaranteed trade-in value for owners of eight, nine and ten year old cars.”

It’s no surprise that 3,000 new Micra buyers have placed orders so far, benefitting from a £2,000 discount as a result of either the Scrappage or Trade-in offers.

With both the Trade-in offer and the Scrappage scheme in place, Nissan has seen a substantial increase in demand. Orders taken as a result of the schemes total more than 5,000, while the Qashqai was the ninth best selling car in the UK in May. By extending the Trade-in offer, Nissan hopes to further increase market share while also giving a valuable boost to the British car industry.

And the anticipated success of the enhanced Nissan Scrappage and Trade-in offers has already had a direct impact on the UK manufacturing industry. To meet a temporary increase in demand due in part to the impact of the British scheme and similar offers in other European countries, Nissan’s Sunderland plant will recruit 150 manufacturing staff on fixed-term contracts from June.

Following the Scrappage Scheme go-ahead given by the Government yesterday, Nissan, Britain’s biggest car maker has announced its intention to extend the new car buying incentive to include a £2,000 minimum trade-in against any of its Sunderland built models for owners of cars aged between 8-10 years old.

The standard £2,000 Scrappage incentive is made up of a £1,000 discount off the price of any new Nissan, including Nissan’s LCV range, courtesy of the Government, and a further £1,000 reduction from Nissan for owners of pre-1999 models*. However, Nissan is extending the £2,000 minimum trade-in offer to models aged 8-10 years old for any customer choosing one of the car maker’s British built range – that includes any new Micra, Note, Qashqai or Qashqai+2.

That means drivers keen to trade-in their 8 year old car can take delivery of the chic British built Micra for as little as £5,995. Built at Nissan’s award winning Sunderland Plant, the thrifty supermini is capable of up to 61.4mpg in the combined cycle, helping to make it a much more environmentally friendly choice than virtually any pre-2001 alternative.

In putting its full support behind the Scrappage Scheme, the Government is aiming to replace older, more polluting vehicles with cleaner, greener alternatives. And with a workforce of 3,900 at the Sunderland Plant and over 5,000 within its dealer network, choosing a Nissan adds the further benefit for buyers of supporting the British motor industry.

Nissan’s Preferences PCP scheme also allows customers to put down as little deposit as they can afford while safe in the knowledge that the future value of their car is guaranteed.

ŠKODA SCRAPPAGE ORDERS TOP 4,500

• Škoda customers have ordered over 4,500 new cars through scrappage
• Fabia most popular model

In less than three months since the government’s vehicle scrappage programme began, Škoda has taken over 4,500 new car orders from customers across the UK. Customers have discovered that the Czech manufacturer really does make happy drivers as they have become proud new owners of cars across the entire Škoda range, from entry-level Fabia superminis to top-of-the-range, luxurious Superbs.

Of the total of 4,521 orders, 1,991 have already been delivered, with a remaining 2,530 customers waiting to take delivery. Of the cars handed in for scrapping, nearly nine out of 10 have been conquest sales and have ranged from a Trabant to a Porsche.

Fabia is the best-selling Škoda to scrappage customers, accounting for 81% of the total. Octavia orders total 673, or 15% of the total, followed by 134 Roomster orders and 40 Superbs.

Trading in a scrappage-eligible car for a new Škoda is a good choice for both the customer and the environment. It means that customers drive away in a safe, modern car that offers great value, great fuel economy and low CO2 emissions as well as Škoda’s fine attention to the comfort and convenience of driver and passengers.

Modern features that provide comfort and convenience for Škoda customers that were unheard of in the 10-year old cars being traded in include: central locking; electric front windows; height-adjustable driver’s seat; height- and reach adjustable steering wheel; radio with CD and MP3 connection; drinks holders; shopping bag hooks; and a split, folding rear seat. HYUNDAI WAVES GOODBYE TO THE ROVERS, WOMAC WAVES HELLO TO A £750 CHEQUE

Over the past four months the most requested cars on the Hyundai press fleet have been Rovers!

As leaders in scrappage sales, Hyundai wanted to give journalists a taste of what it's like to drive an old car day-in, day out. So we sent them a ‘snotter’ for a few days instead of a nice new press car. After a few days with the banger a driver would arrive with a nice new Hyundai. For some that day couldn’t come soon enough.

Apart from the expected trials of driving an old car, there were other ‘incidents’ that show how perilous it can be relying on bangers to get you around. One person reported the door not opening when they tried to get out and therefore had to climb out of the window of our lovely blue Metro! They were grateful it happened in the privacy of the driveway and not the car park of the Shropshire Star.

Ken Gibson from The Sun had to abandon the Maestro at Chobham when it started to rapidly overheat. It only made a further two bookings afterwards before the engine seized. The Maestro was then donated to High Wycombe-based charity Skidz who will use it to teach 13-16 year old car mechanics.

As an added incentive, for every 100 miles driven Hyundai promised a donation of £20 to WOMAC and many took up the challenge to drive a long way indeed. In second place was David Duffy in the Maestro with 454 miles. Sean O’Grady, Andrew Charman, Iain Dooley and Ken Gibson also covered some impressive distances so deserve a mention!

But the winner, adding to his collection of many awards, is Richard Aucock. He managed an impressive 502 miles in the Maestro. Richard said: “It wasn’t tortuous but it was different to a nice modern car. All the sensations were so different- the choke, the smell of petrol, needing arm muscles to turn the wheel. I kept forgetting there was no central locking so I am surprised it didn’t get nicked. I almost crashed it in the first four yards because it is so low geared and the steering was so heavy. I had forgotten what driving an old car was like.”  

One journo, who shall remain nameless, didn’t drive a single yard in the Rover 214. We can only assume once he saw it he was too scared or embarrassed to drive it in public.

The Metro and 214 are shortly to go to a new home, into the loving arms of a well-known Austin-Rover enthusiast who is keen on saving Britain’s most famous bangers!

MORE RECORDS SMASHED FOR HYUNDAI IN SEPTEMBER

• Car maker beats best ever sales total – with three months to go!
• Record monthly sales, despite running out of cars
• Scrappage extension opens up scheme to new buyers

Hyundai dealers were be celebrating after beating the company’s best ever annual sales total and selling more cars in a single month than ever before. But they’re not being allowed to relax as another ship full of cars has just arrived and is being rushed out to waiting customers.

The Korean company sold 11,031 cars in September, up from 4,970 in the same month last year. The figure is the best ever single sales month in Hyundai UK’s history, and pushed the company’s total sales in 2009 to 40,578 – passing the previous total annual sales record of 37,611 from 2004.

Tony Whitehorn, Hyundai’s managing director, said: “This result is incredible given that we still have a quarter of the year remaining. Demand for our cars is unrelenting. We could have sold twice as many in September, but we simply ran out of cars and time. There are more ships arriving now, all full of our most popular models, and we are rushing them out to customers as fast as we can!”

As you would expect, Tony Whitehorn has welcomed the extension to the scrappage scheme announced last week. He said: “Thousands of people in the UK recognise that scrappage is a very special offer and have snapped it up. They will now continue to do so well into the new year, and the offer has been opened up to owners of younger cars and vans. With the economy still fragile and the VAT increase on its way, the industry and consumers needed this extra confidence going into the new year.”

SALES FIGURES SET TO SHOCK – HYUNDAI TAKES NUMBER ONE

• Hyundai outsells Ford to top retail sales charts in August
• Record market share; sales up 323%
• i10 overtakes Corsa to become third best seller in UK

Official car sales figures released today are set to send shockwaves through the industry. Hyundai sold more cars to retail customers in August than any other brand, overtaking Ford and Vauxhall.

The figures, which would have seemed inconceivable a few months ago, show that Hyundai’s overall sales for the month rose 323% compared to August last year to 3,737. It gives Hyundai a record overall market share of 5.6%.

The i10 city car has been the company’s biggest success, with 2,431 finding homes in August. This makes it Britain’s third best selling car, relegating the Vauxhall Corsa to fourth place.

Remove fleet sales from the equation and the i10’s achievement is even more impressive. The city car is not only the most popular model bought by retail customers, but it outsold the second placed car by a factor of more than two to one!

Hyundai’s managing director, Tony Whitehorn, said: “These are truly historic figures for Hyundai. There are now thousands of happy new Hyundai drivers, and these owners’ recommendations will become our best advertising. It will ensure that Hyundai’s success continues years to come.”

Although the August figures are amazing, many Hyundai buyers chose to delay registering their new cars until September, allowing them to have a car wearing the new ‘59’ registration numbers. This means that Hyundai’s sales figures this month are set to be even more impressive.

“We are well on the way to making September the best ever month for sales in the company’s history” said Mr Whitehorn. “Our dealers have taken on an average of 20% more staff to cope with demand.”

Hyundai dealers are bracing themselves for the busiest month in the network’s history, as thousands of customers rush to take advantage of the government scrappage scheme.

The company secured extra production of the most popular i10, i20 and i30 models and has rushed them to Britain to make sure buyers can secure scrappage funds before the government’s pot of cash runs out.

In the past month more than 10,000 new Hyundai cars have arrived at Tilbury docks in Essex, been processed and sent straight out to dealers. This is three times the amount of vehicles processed in the same period last year.

Dealers have taken on extra staff to cope with the demand and several plan to open around the clock to help process the orders and arriving cars.

It’s not just the ‘i’ cars which have been a sell-out success. Hyundai secured the last Coupes to come off the production line and was able to pass a massive £5,035 discount on to buyers. It means that the head-turner is available for just £11,995 with scrappage – less than a mid-range supermini!

Buyers are recognising the Coupe offer is a real bargain and have been snapping them up, with more than 1,000 sold in the past six weeks. Stocks are only expected to last until the end of September.

Hyundai’s managing director, Tony Whitehorn, said: “No other manufacturer has worked harder to keep scrappage customers satisfied. We are expecting record numbers of buyers to choose a Hyundai for their new 59 registration car this September as we clear away the scraps and bring bargain-hungry buyers a new plate.”

BMW AND MINI PUTS WEIGHT BEHIND NEW SCRAPPAGE INCENTIVE

Following yesterday’s Budget announcement about the government’s scrappage scheme, BMW UK has today confirmed that it will participate in the programme. The government’s £1,000 contribution will be matched by BMW to make a total saving of £2,000 off a new BMW or MINI.

To see how the new scrappage incentive will affect new car buyers, the example below outlines the financial savings that are possible. Now a customer will be able to get behind the wheel of a new BMW 116i Sport for just £242 a month, with zero deposit. With the government scrappage payment, the matching BMW offer and an additional dealer contribution the total discount available on this model equates to £3,260. The BMW 116i has class-leading economy and low CO2 emissions and, like all other EfficientDynamic-equipped BMWs, makes excellent financial sense too. A zero to 62mph time of 9.8 seconds and output of 122hp results in a car that is also fun to drive.

Note: Above quote is based on a typical 7.8 per cent APR, the amount of credit offered is £13,960, first monthly payment would be £416, optional final payment would be £6,574 and the total amount payable £16,670. The contract mileage is 35,000 miles with excess mileage charged at 4.5p per mile.

MINI URGES UK MOTORISTS TO BUY BRITISH UNDER GOVERNMENT SCRAPPAGE SCHEME

MINI UK and the government will be offering British car buyers £2,000* towards the purchase price of any new MINI as part of plans to introduce a scrappage incentive scheme in the UK.

Since its launch in 2001, MINI has continually offered customers minimal whole-life ownership costs, in part due to industry-leading residual values. With a £2,000 reduction soon to be available on the list price of any MINI Hatch, MINI Clubman or even all-new MINI Convertible, customers buying from the Oxford-based car manufacturer will be assured of a sound financial investment, as well as a unique, premium small car.
