What is the Vauxhall Grandland?

But, first, what is the new Vauxhall Grandland?
Well, in our view, this is a stylish and practical family SUV that really is designed to blend a bit of everyday functionality with a touch of style as it does so.

For instance, it is the kind of car that feels just as at home on a country road as it does in city traffic, and this is thanks to the fact that Vauxhall has given it a bold design refresh with a very stylish look that includes their signature space-age ‘Vizor’ front grille with a light bar on the front end - making it stand out a bit more on the road than you would expect as a result.

For instance, inside, it’s packed with tech and comfort, with a digital cockpit display and an easy-to-use infotainment system. While it has also got options for hybrid engines if you’re looking to go that bit greener - with both plug-in and petrol options here.

It’s spacious, too, so it's great for families or anyone who just wants a bit more room to stretch out at the same time.

Altogether, though, it’s a well-rounded Vauxhall SUV that is practical and modern and has a bit of that extra charm that makes driving enjoyable every time we get in.

The Vauxhall Grandland was first launched in Germany at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2017. It was introduced as a compact / medium SUV that is primarily aimed at families and those looking for a reliable, stylish vehicle.

Shortly after its Frankfurt launch, it was quickly released across Europe, including the UK, where it quickly attracted attention for its spacious design and family-friendly features and has since sold close to 1 million cars already.

As part of the PSA Group (which also owns Peugeot and Citroën), Vauxhall chose to align the Grandland with the platform shared with Peugeot and Citroën.

The Grandland has since become a core part of Vauxhall's SUV lineup in both the UK and European markets due to how well it has sold.

It came as part of Vauxhall's lineup refresh as well and was initially known as the Grandland X.

As a result, over the years, the Grandland has seen a few updates to keep it modern and competitive, with the most recent facelift being in 2021, where Vauxhall dropped the “X” from its name and introduced a sharper, more high-tech look at the same time.

This update included Vauxhall’s new ‘Vizor’ front grille, for instance, as well as upgraded interiors and the addition of plug-in hybrid options, to name a few.

Exterior Design

So, now you know a bit more about where it came from, let us dive into its exterior design and take a closer look at each part, from the front to the rear, so you know what this car's strengths and weaknesses are here.

Front

At first glance, the front of this car really makes an impression on us.

For instance, one of the first things you will notice is that it is all about boldness here - with a confident grille that stretches across the front, often with a modern, honeycomb or mesh design as it does so.

The headlights — well, they are sharp, almost like the eyes of a hawk, giving it that intense look that you want when on the road.

You might also notice its LED Daytime Running Lights, which not only look fantastic, to be honest, but add to the safety aspect during your drive simultaneously.

And if you’re looking at a higher trim level, you can even spot some chrome accents around the grille - which just adds that extra bit of style to the car in our total view - making the front a very nice-looking car on the whole.

Side Profile

Moving along to the side, the profile here is also stylish and streamlined - partly why it can get 51 MPG combined, going up to 192 MPG with the Plug-in hybrid - for its fuel economy, but we will come on to that in more detail in a bit.

Here, one of the things we noticed is it is designed with a gentle flow from front to back, giving the whole car an almost coupe-like silhouette as it does so.

You will also appreciate its character lines that run along the doors, giving it a sense of movement even when it’s parked, and the window line has a subtle black trim as well, which just ties everything together nicely.

The mirrors, which colour-match the trim, also sit perched nicely, with built-in indicators in the middle as well.

Roofline

For the roofline, this is one of those details that can completely change the vibe of a car, and this one is designed with care that is obvious to see in our view.

For instance, it is slightly sloped towards the rear, which gives it a more dynamic, sporty stance; while this look also helps with its aerodynamics, yes, it also just looks incredibly stylish as it does, so we thought.

And if you are a fan of panoramic roofs, many of its trims offer them, allowing you loads of natural light inside and making the whole cabin feel more open by having one.

Rear

The back end is where this car brings it all home, though, for its exterior. You have got some nice-looking angled rear lights, and the design here is tidy and uncluttered - giving it a premium look, to be frank.

It also has a slip lip on the rear, which gives it a slight spoiler and adds a bit of sporty charm, especially when combined with its chrome accent around the exhaust area for that added touch of class as well.

Then, to polish off the rear, you see dual exhaust tips peeking out, adding to the car’s athletic vibe as well.

Wheels

For its wheels, this is an area where this car really lets its personality shine.

This even goes from its basic alloys to the larger, more intricate designs on higher trims - there really is something for everyone here.

For instance, here, you will find options ranging from around 16 inches up to 20 inches or even bigger - depending on the model.

Colour Options

Finally, the colour options!
This car’s palette is full of modern choices. For example, alongside the classic blacks, whites, and silvers, there are some bolder choices — think deep reds, midnight blacks, or even some nice greys that give it a bit of a stylish edge.

And if you’re a fan of metallic or pearl finishes, they’re available too, - adding a bit of shimmer that really pops in the sunlight as a result.

With some of the more common paint colours being, for instance:

  • Arctic White (0MP0/0NWP) - Brilliant paint
  • Contrast Grey (0MM0/0NF4) - Two-coat metallic paint
  • Carbon Black (0MM0/0N9V) - Two-coat metallic paint
  • Carmin Red (0MM0/0NLM) - Two-coat premium metallic paint
  • Black roof

Interior Space, Design and Comfort

Next let’s dive into the cabin vibes and tech inside this car to give you a feel for what it’s like and to see its pros and cons here.

Front and Rear Seats

Starting with the seats — both front and rear, the designers really nailed it in our view here with plenty of comfort and space.

The front seats, for instance, have a lot of room for stretching out, so you won’t feel cramped even on longer drives, and the driver's seat is also electronically adjustable to find your ideal driving position as well.

They are also sculpted in a way that feels ergonomic, with great lumbar support, making the seats feel like they are hugging you a bit.

And for those in the back, it’s not an afterthought at all!
Here, your rear passengers will enjoy plenty of legroom with up to 33 inches - which is ideal for both adult passengers and car seats alike, especially with its Isofix points.

So, whether you are carpooling, taking a family trip, or just loading up with friends, everyone has a cosy spot in our view.

Infotainment System and Internal Tech

Tech-wise, this car feels like it’s bringing you into the future as you get a lot of features that come with more premium models as well.

For instance, the infotainment system is set up to be super intuitive; even if you’re not usually a tech person, it is pretty simple to get to grips with.

It has a touchscreen interface that is also both bright and responsive, so it’s a breeze to use, especially with its smartphone integration as well; you can seamlessly connect to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto really easily - which means your favourite apps, maps, and playlists are just a tap away.

Plus, there are pretty good voice control features for when you are on the go - so you can adjust settings or even ask for directions without taking your hands off the wheel in doing so.

Boot Space

Now, let us talk about the boot space. One thing we noticed is that you won’t have to play Tetris to fit your stuff in!

For instance, thanks to its 540 litres of space, there really is a generous amount of cargo space - enough for your luggage, sports gear, or a big grocery haul, all without having to cram it all in.

And, if you need even more room, the rear seats fold down flat, extending this further up to 1,645 litres, making it easy to load in larger items like bikes or DIY supplies.

So whether it is a weekend getaway or a daily errand, the boot space is really has been designed to keep up with your life in our view.

Luggage capacities – Litres (cu.ft.) Petrol
Rear seats up (under luggage compartment cover) Rear seats up 514 (18.1)
Rear seats folded (to roof) 1652 (58.3)

Upholstery

When it comes to the upholstery, though, this car has some seriously good material choices.

Even the base version of the new model comes with soft, durable fabric, but you can upgrade to leather-affect or leatherette for a more luxurious feel if you so wish.

The leather-affect option is not just about aesthetics; it’s buttery smooth and feels more upscale than this car should, making every drive feel a bit special as a result.

The stitching detail here also adds a refined touch, and with multiple colour choices, you can really personalise the cabin to your taste as well.

So, whether you prefer something classic like black or a bolder tan or grey, there’s something for everyone.

Performance and Engine Options

The New Grandland also has a lineup of engines, including both manual and automatic gearboxes, that really lets you pick the drive you’re after, which balances both power and fuel efficiency to suit your different needs.

You have got the classic option - fuel-efficient petrol engines - which are ideal if you are looking for reliable performance on your daily drives.

Hybrid Engines

And for those leaning green, there is also a plug-in hybrid version that comes with regenerative braking, which is ideal for reducing your emissions without sacrificing flexibility - giving you better options around congestion charge zones as a result.

Fuel Economy

Fuel your economy is top-notch across the board with up to 51 MPG combined on just petrol and 192 MPG with the plug-in hybrid model - meaning you will get more real world miles for your money over time, no matter which engine you go with.

Driving Modes

Plus, with multiple driving modes available - including Sport mode - the Grandland can switch between eco-friendly and sportier settings really easily. So, whether you’re looking to save on fuel or want a bit more zip on the road, this car’s ready to adapt to your style literally at the touch of a button.

Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Options

For those looking for electric model choices, Vauxhall offers this with an electric powertrain thanks to its plug-in hybrid powertrain - the Vauxhall Grandland Hybrid-e. < /p>

The new Grandland Plug-in HYBRID-e then gives you more than just another electric mid-size SUV. For example, with up to 225PS combined petrol-electric power and a 39-mile pure electric range, it will easily cover your daily commute - especially when combined with a 1.6 180PS Turbo petrol engine for longer journeys as well.

It then achieves all this while keeping your emissions low and costs down. If we’re talking figures here, that’s up to 192 MPG with CO2 of only 31g/km produced, for example.

Handling

The New Grandland has also been designed to cater to a range of driving styles, thanks to its good engine options that give you a nice balance between power and efficiency as it does so.

So, whether you are looking for a bit more punch on the road or prioritising your fuel savings, there really is an engine setup to suit you, as you can see above.

Ride Quality

However, when it comes to its riding and handling, the New Grandland is ready for both city streets and the open motorway alike in our view.

This is due to its finely tuned-suspension that does a great job of absorbing bumps, while it also keept our ride smooth and comfortable as well.

In more tight city spaces, the handling felt precise and responsive, while on the motorway, its stability shined to us, giving it more confidence at higher speeds.

Cabin Insulation

Cabin insulation also plays a big role in making drives enjoyable by reducing road noise, so you get a peaceful, quieter cabin environment, and we thought here this is to a high standard.

For its electric and hybrid models, the high-voltage battery has an extended eight-year / 100,000-mile warranty, ensuring that you get long-term support for its electric components as well.

This warranty then includes roadside assistance during the first year, adding extra reassurance for new owners as well.

Insurance Groups

For your insurance groups, the Grandland is rather cheap to insure, with it coming in at Groups 17E and 20E out of 50.

How Does the Grandland Compare to Similar SUVs?

In our view, the Vauxhall Grandland brings its own charm and unique strengths to the SUV lineup.

While the competition here is fierce, with models like the Kia Sportage, Skoda Karoq and Ford Kuga offering solid all-around packages, the Grandland holds its own with a great combination of comfort, style, and tech that feels especially rewarding as well.

For instance:

Practicality and Comfort

When it comes to daily usability, the Grandland does an excellent job of balancing space and comfort - putting it in a sweet spot between the Nissan Qashqai and the Peugeot 3008.

For instance, here, it really offers you good rear legroom, lots of storage space, and boot space that rivals even larger options like the Skoda Kodiaq and Audi Q3, making it very family-friendly without feeling oversized.

Interior Quality and Tech

For the interior, Vauxhall has given the Grandland a very sleek and user-friendly space with tech that competes well against the Volkswagen Tiguan and the Citroën C5 Aircross, for example as well.

Its intuitive infotainment system and digital cockpit are also easy to navigate, and it’s fitted with features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a quality sound system as well. It may not be as premium - or come with the price tag either - as the Audi Q3, but it strikes a great balance of quality for the price, giving you many of its features and a very comfortable cabin for a lot, lot less, while also outshining some of the other options like the MG HS and even the Hyundai Ioniq in terms of standard tech features as well here.

Driving Experience and Performance

Moving along to how the Grandland handles, this is a smooth and confident drive, something it shares well with the Ford Kuga, Hyundai Tucson, Citroen C5 Aircross, and SEAT Ateca, for instance.

It also feels solid on motorways and town drives alike, with decent power in its petrol and hybrid options, which can't be said for some of its competitors listed.

And for electric enthusiasts, the Grandland Hybrid is a worthy rival to the fully electric Volkswagen ID.5 as well as the Skoda Enyaq while keeping a more traditional SUV feel as it does so.

Value for Money

Vauxhall’s pricing structure makes the Grandland particularly appealing if you're after good value and a good car overall.

Here, for instance, it comes with attractive car financing and warranty packages, putting it in a favourable light compared to pricier options like the Skoda Kodiaq or the Volkswagen ID.5.

Plus, it also can include more standard features than some rivals, so you get a lot of bang for your buck, so to speak, all without needing to add on pricey extras as you do so.

Vauxhall Grandland Final Thoughts

As you can see, the new Vauxhall Grandland really is a family-friendly SUV that gives you a lot of practical features with a dash of style as it does so - making it a lovely option for those wanting a bit of everything in their vehicle.

For instance, it is spacious and comfortable and comes with some fantastic features for both short commutes and long journeys alike.

Inside, we went over how there is plenty of room for your passengers, plus enough boot space for the weekly shop or a holiday’s worth of luggage too.

In terms of performance, the Grandland also drives very smoothly, handling bumps and curves really easily. It’s not exactly a high-speed sports car, but it offers you a reliable and steady experience that feels reassuring on the road, which is more than what families are after with this type of car.

Plus, this version of the Grandland looks the part, and its design has that modern SUV charm with sleek lines and a slightly rugged stance - which gives you a very confident presence on the road without being too flashy - making it the kind of car that does its job well and looks good doing it!

Overall, if you're after an SUV that’s comfortable, reliable, and has a few good tech touches, the Vauxhall Grandland is well worth a look and gets our full marks. So much so it is practical, family-friendly, and delivers just the right amount of style – all with a pleasant driving experience that makes it a top choice in its category as an end result - making this just possibly your next perfect car and a good deal as well.
