If you’re looking at Nissan’s electric range, LEAF and ARIYA are two names you’ll probably be comparing quite early on.

Both are fully electric, and are spacious five-seaters. Both offer smooth, quiet driving and modern, clever interiors. The difference is where they both sit in the Nissan range.

Of the two, LEAF is the more compact and accessible electric car. The latest generation brings a sleeker crossover-style shape, strong range, a practical boot and the reassurance of being built in Britain.

The ARIYA is the larger, more premium electric SUV. It gives you a roomier cabin, a more lounge-like interior, longer-distance comfort and a more upmarket feel.

Both are fantastic Nissan EVs – but choosing between them depends on how much space you need, how far you regularly drive, and your budget.

Whats the main difference between LEAF and ARIYA?

The simplest difference is exterior size, and positioning in Nissan’s lineup.

The LEAF sits below ARIYA in the Nissan electric range, with a smaller footprint and lower price. The all-new model is no longer the familiar hatchback shape many drivers remember: having been redesigned as a more modern electric crossover.

The ARIYA is a larger electric SUV. It has a larger, more lounge-like cabin and a larger boot. In effect, ARIYA is Nissan’s flagship EV: the largest and most premium electric model on offer.

Is the Nissan LEAF smaller than the ARIYA?

Yes. The LEAF is shorter, narrower and lower than the ARIYA.

The all-new LEAF measures 4,350mm long, 1,810mm wide without mirrors and 1,550mm tall. The ARIYA measures 4,595mm long, 1,850mm wide without mirrors and 1,660mm tall.

If you’re struggling for driveway space, the LEAF could be easier to park, at around 25cm shorter than the ARIYA. It still gives you a useful raised feel and a practical boot, but it doesn’t feel as large as a full SUV.

The ARIYA gives you more size and presence, but without taking up quite as much space as the average modern SUV. The extra length, width and height help create its more relaxed cabin feel, especially for taller drivers and passengers.

If you regularly drive in towns, park in tighter spaces or prefer a car that feels easy to handle, LEAF has the advantage. If you want a larger SUV stance and a roomier cabin, ARIYA is the one to spend time in.

Which has the bigger boot: LEAF or ARIYA?

The ARIYA has the bigger boot with the rear seats in place.

All-new LEAF gets 437 litres of boot space, or up to 1,052 litres with the rear seats folded. That’s a strong figure for a compact electric crossover, and it gives the it plenty of room for shopping, luggage, school bags, charging cables and weekend kit.

The ARIYA offers up to 466 litres of boot space, and up to 1,350 litres with the rear seats folded, making it even more spacious than the LEAF.

The important point is that both are usable. The LEAF gives you a very practical boot in a smaller car. The ARIYA gives you more space overall, especially when the rear seats are folded down.

Which has the longest range?

The all-new LEAF offers two battery options: 52kWh and 75kWh.

The 52kWh LEAF gives up to 280 miles of WLTP range. The 75kWh LEAF gives up to 387 miles of WLTP range. That makes the latest LEAF a very strong long-range option, especially in 75kWh form.

The ARIYA is also available with two battery options: 63kWh and 87kWh. The outgoing ARIYA’s driving range is between 247 to 330 miles, depending on version.

So, the LEAF 75kWh offers the longest official range of the two cars.

Which charges faster?

Both models support DC rapid charging via CCS, and both are designed to make EV ownership straightforward.

Nissan says the all-new LEAF can rapid charge from 10% to 80% in as little as 35 minutes, thanks to rapid charging speeds of up to 150kW.

For ARIYA, the same rapid charger can add up to 217 miles in as little as 30 minutes, with speeds of up to 130kW supported.

In normal ownership, most charging will often happen at home or work – and both cars support up to 11kW AC charging via a regular wall box.

Which is better for town driving?

The LEAF is likely to feel more natural in town. Its smaller dimensions make it easier to manoeuvre, and the electric drive gives you smooth, quiet response in traffic.

ARIYA is suited to town driving too, with a commanding driving position that makes it easy to place on the road – and of course, the same smooth electric powertrain.

Depending on trim level, both are available with helpful parking aids like Nissan’s Around View 360 degree camera system, and regular parking sensors – both of which make squeezing around tight urban environments a doddle.

Which is better for longer journeys?

The LEAF 75kWh has the range figure that immediately stands out. Up to 387 miles gives it excellent long-distance ability, especially for drivers who want to cover bigger trips with fewer charging stops. Its smaller size should also help efficiency.

The ARIYA counters with refinement. The cabin is larger and designed to look more premium, with a calm driving position and a more relaxed SUV feel. If you spend a lot of time on motorways and want a more luxurious environment, ARIYA makes a strong case for itself too.

A Nissan dealer would put it like this: choose LEAF if range, value and efficiency are at the top of your list. Choose ARIYA if long-distance comfort and cabin space matter more.

Which feels more premium inside?

While both LEAF and ARIYA have comfortable and plush interiors, ARIYA does go one step beyond. The interior is open, clean and quiet, with a more lounge-like design than a conventional SUV. It feels calm before you even set off, and the fully electric drive adds to that sense of refinement on the road.

The LEAF is more modern and advanced than ever, with large displays, and an electronically-dimmable panoramic roof.

If you want the most premium Nissan EV cabin, ARIYA is the answer. If you want a well-equipped electric car with a more accessible price, LEAF is the way to go.

Is Nissan LEAF built in Britain?

Yes. The all-new LEAF is built at Nissan’s Sunderland plant.

It follows two previous generations of LEAF built in the same factory, and is part of Nissan’s EV36Zero project – which supports the next chapter of electrified manufacturing in Sunderland.

The ARIYA is built in Japan, at Nissan’s Tochigi plant – the same factory that once assembled the legendary GT-R supercar.

Both have strong Nissan stories behind them. LEAF brings British-built EV heritage. ARIYA brings Nissan’s more premium electric SUV character.

Choose LEAF if…

…you want a compact, but still spacious, Nissan EV.

It’s a strong fit if you want up to 387 miles of range, a practical boot, easy town driving, strong value and the reassurance of a British-built electric car. The 52kWh version gives a lower entry price, while the 75kWh version gives impressive long-distance capability.

LEAF makes the most sense for drivers who want one electric car that’s efficient, practical and easy to live with.

Choose ARIYA if…

…you want a larger and more premium Nissan EV.

It’s a strong fit if you want a more spacious cabin, a quieter SUV feel, a higher driving position and a more upmarket interior. The 87kWh version gives strong range, while selected current versions also offer extra performance and all-wheel-drive capability.

ARIYA makes the most sense for drivers who want their EV to feel more luxurious and more SUV-like.

The Nissan Ariya and LEAF are both available to test drive at Platinum Trowbridge and Platinum Box!
