If you’re looking at Nissan’s SUV range, Qashqai and Juke are two models you’ll probably compare quite early on.
Both are compact enough for everyday driving, both offer petrol and hybrid options, and both give you the raised driving position that has made Nissan SUVs so popular in the UK.
The difference is where they sit in the range.
The Juke is the smaller and more affordable car. It has bold styling, compact dimensions, a useful boot and a choice of petrol or hybrid power. It’s easy to drive, easy to park and has more space than many people expect from a small SUV.
The Qashqai is the larger and more grown-up SUV. It gives you more rear-seat space, a bigger boot, a more relaxed cabin and the option of Nissan’s clever e-POWER system, where the wheels are driven by an electric motor.
Both are excellent Nissan SUVs, but choosing between them depends on how much space you need, how far you drive and how much you want to spend.
What’s the main difference between Qashqai and Juke?
The main difference is size.
The Juke is Nissan’s smaller SUV. It’s designed for drivers who want the style and raised feel of an SUV, but without moving into a larger car. That makes it a strong fit for town driving, commuting, first-time SUV buyers and anyone who wants something distinctive without taking up too much space.
The Qashqai sits above it. It’s larger, roomier and more substantial, with extra space in the back seats and boot. It also feels more settled on longer journeys, especially if you regularly drive with passengers or luggage.
Another key difference is the hybrid technology.
The Juke is available with a petrol engine or a self-charging hybrid system. The Qashqai is available as a mild hybrid or with Nissan’s e-POWER technology, which gives a more EV-like driving feel without needing to plug in.
Is the Nissan Qashqai bigger than the Juke?
Yes. The Qashqai is longer, wider and taller than the Juke.
The Qashqai measures 4,425mm long, 1,835mm wide without mirrors and 1,625mm tall. The Juke measures 4,210mm long, 1,800mm wide without mirrors and 1,593mm tall.
That makes the Qashqai around 21cm longer than the Juke. It’s also slightly wider and taller, which helps explain why it feels more spacious inside.
The Juke still feels like a proper SUV from behind the wheel. You sit higher than you would in a normal small hatchback, and the car has a strong sense of character. But it’s noticeably easier to manage in tighter streets and car parks.
The Qashqai gives you more presence and more room. It’s still very manageable by SUV standards, but it feels like the bigger car of the two.
Which is easier to park?
Both Juke and Qashqai are easy to park, but if external dimensions are important, Juke has the edge.
Its smaller size gives it the advantage in tight spaces, especially in towns, multi-storey car parks and narrow residential streets. It also has a tighter turning circle than the Qashqai, which helps with awkward manoeuvres.
That doesn’t mean the Qashqai is difficult. Far from it. Depending on grade, both models are available with useful parking aids such as rear-view cameras, parking sensors and Nissan’s Around View Monitor camera system.
The difference is that Juke feels smaller around you. If you’re moving up from a supermini, it will probably feel more natural straight away.
The Qashqai is better if you want extra space but still need something easy to use every day. It’s one of the reasons the car has been such a familiar sight on UK roads for so long.
Which has the bigger boot: Qashqai or Juke?
The Qashqai has the bigger boot overall.
Depending on version, the Qashqai offers up to 504 litres of boot space with the rear seats in place. With the seats folded, load capacity rises to as much as 1,447 litres on mild hybrid versions.
The Juke is still very useful for its size. Petrol versions have 422 litres of boot space with the rear seats up, or 1,305 litres with them folded down. The Juke Hybrid has a smaller boot because of the hybrid system, with 354 litres seats up and 1,237 litres seats folded.
The important point is that both cars are practical. The Juke gives you a strong boot for a small SUV. The Qashqai gives you more space overall, especially if you regularly carry larger loads.
If you use the boot mainly for shopping, bags, school kit or a weekend away, Juke should cope very well. If you often carry pushchairs, sports gear, luggage or bulky items, Qashqai is the safer choice.
Which is better for rear-seat passengers?
The Qashqai is better for rear-seat passengers.
That extra length and wheelbase make a difference in the back. The Qashqai feels roomier, especially for adults, taller teenagers or anyone sitting behind a tall front-seat passenger.
It also has wide-opening rear doors, which make it easier to get in and out. That’s useful if you regularly carry children, older relatives or anyone who finds a lower car awkward.
The Juke has five seats and is perfectly usable, but it’s still the smaller car. Rear space is better suited to shorter journeys, occasional adult passengers or younger children.
If you mainly drive alone or with one passenger, Juke will probably have all the space you need. If your rear seats are used all the time, Qashqai makes more sense.
Which is better for town driving?
Both Juke and Qashqai are great for urban environments, but Juke has been specifically designed for life in the city.
It’s shorter, lighter and more compact, which makes it feel nimble in traffic. The raised driving position gives a good view out, and the smaller body helps when you’re squeezing through gaps or reversing into tight spaces.
The petrol Juke is straightforward and affordable, while the Juke Hybrid adds smoother electric-assisted driving at lower speeds. Around town, that hybrid system suits the car very well.
The Qashqai is also very good in town, especially in e-POWER form. Because the wheels are driven by an electric motor, it feels smooth and responsive in stop-start driving. There’s no plug to worry about, but the driving experience has more of the calm feel people associate with an EV.
A Nissan dealer would probably put it like this: choose Juke if you want the smaller, easier car. Choose Qashqai e-POWER if you want a bigger SUV that still feels smooth and relaxing in traffic.
Which is better for longer journeys?
The Qashqai is better for longer journeys, with a slightly plusher, more grown-up feel than the Juke. It feels more settled on motorways, has more cabin space and gives rear-seat passengers more room to stretch out. The larger boot also helps if you’re travelling with luggage.
Qashqai e-POWER makes a particularly strong case here. The wheels are driven by an electric motor, while a petrol engine generates electricity for the system. That gives smooth acceleration and a quieter, more EV-like feel, without needing to charge the car.
The Juke can handle longer journeys too, especially if you don’t need the extra space of the Qashqai. The Hybrid version is efficient, and the car is comfortable enough for regular motorway use.
But if you do a lot of longer trips, the Qashqai’s extra refinement, space and more relaxed driving position give it the advantage.
Which has the better hybrid system?
That depends on what sort of hybrid driving you want.
The Juke Hybrid is a self-charging hybrid. It combines a petrol engine with an electric motor and battery, and the car decides how to use them. It can drive on electric power at lower speeds when conditions allow, and it doesn’t need plugging in.
That makes it a good fit for town use, commuting and drivers who want better efficiency without changing their habits.
Qashqai e-POWER works differently. The petrol engine doesn’t drive the wheels directly. Instead, it generates electricity, while the electric motor drives the car.
That gives the Qashqai a more electric feel. Acceleration is smooth and immediate, and the car responds in a way that feels closer to an EV than a traditional hybrid.
If you want the most affordable Nissan hybrid SUV, look at Juke Hybrid. If you want the most advanced hybrid driving experience, Qashqai e-POWER is the one to try.
Which is cheaper: Qashqai or Juke?
The Juke is cheaper to buy.
Juke prices start from £24,485 for the petrol Acenta Premium manual. The Juke Hybrid range starts from £30,295 in N-Connecta grade.
Qashqai prices start from £30,635 for the mild hybrid Acenta Premium manual. Qashqai e-POWER starts from £34,875.
That makes the Juke the more accessible car, especially if you’re buying with a fixed monthly budget in mind.
The Qashqai costs more, but you are getting a larger SUV with more space and, in e-POWER form, a more sophisticated hybrid system. For many buyers, that extra spend will be easy to justify.
If price is your biggest priority, Juke has the advantage. If space and refinement matter more, Qashqai earns its higher position in the range.
Is a Juke or a Qashqai is more economical?
The most economical versions of both cars are the hybrid models.
The Juke Hybrid returns up to around 60mpg officially, depending on grade and specification. That makes it a very appealing choice if you do lots of town driving and want lower running costs.
Qashqai e-POWER is also very efficient for a larger SUV. Official figures put it at more than 60mpg, again depending on version.
The difference is that Qashqai is a bigger car, so getting that level of efficiency is a big part of the e-POWER story. It gives you the space of a larger SUV with running costs that should be much easier to live with than a conventional petrol SUV of similar size.
For lower purchase price and strong economy, Juke Hybrid looks very attractive. For a bigger car with impressive efficiency, Qashqai e-POWER is the standout.
Which has the better interior?
The Qashqai has the more spacious and more premium-feeling interior, while the Juke’s feels more driver-centric and sporty.
It feels wider across the cabin, more open in the back and more substantial overall. Higher grades add features such as Google built-in, a head-up display, Bose audio, a panoramic glass roof and more premium trim finishes.
The Juke has a sportier feel. Its cabin is more compact, but it still offers plenty of modern Nissan technology. Current versions get a large 12.3-inch infotainment screen, a 12.3-inch driver display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and useful parking technology depending on grade.
So it isn’t a case of the Juke feeling basic. It has a strong equipment story, especially in N-Connecta, Pulse Edition and Tekna+ form.
The Qashqai just feels like the car from the class above, because that’s exactly what it is.
Which has better technology?
Both cars can be very well equipped.
The Juke gets strong standard equipment from the entry Acenta Premium grade, including a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 12.3-inch TFT driver display, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a rear-view camera and rear parking sensors.
Higher Juke grades add features such as heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 360-degree camera and ProPILOT technology, depending on version.
The Qashqai goes further on higher grades. It can add Google built-in, 3D Around View Monitor, ProPILOT Assist with Navi-Link, ProPILOT Park on e-POWER versions, a Bose sound system, head-up display and premium interior details.
If you want strong technology at a lower price, Juke is very competitive. If you want the most advanced Nissan SUV, Qashqai has the edge.
Choose Juke if…
…you want a smaller and more affordable Nissan SUV.
It’s a strong fit if you want bold styling, easy town driving, lower monthly costs and a car that feels compact without feeling too small.
The petrol version is the value choice, while the Hybrid adds smoother electric-assisted driving and excellent official economy.
Juke makes the most sense for drivers who want an SUV with character, but don’t need the extra size of a Qashqai.
Choose Qashqai if…
…you want more space, more comfort and a more grown-up SUV feel.
It’s a strong fit if you regularly carry passengers, need a bigger boot or spend more time on motorways. The mild hybrid version gives you a familiar petrol SUV, while e-POWER gives you a much more electric-style drive.
Qashqai makes the most sense for drivers who want the practical all-rounder in Nissan’s SUV range.
